The folks at WalMart are handing out brand new stores.
Just last month, we reported that Elsa was getting a WalMart but now another Rio Grande Valley city is getting one too.
Los Fresnos City Manager Mark Milum confirmed that a 122,000-square foot WalMart Supercenter is coming to town.
The store is expected to be built on an undeveloped piece of land across the street from the Stars Drive-In off Highway 100 on the city's westside.
Milum said the WalMart Supercenter is expected to be open by April 2014 and will include groceries, a pharmacy and a garden center.
Although details about the store having a gas station and a tire & lube center have not been finalized, Milum said it will sit on 18 to 22 acres of land.
Just across town, Los Fresnos is also getting a stand-alone McDonalds restaurant.
The fast food restaurant will be between the Stripes convenience store and Dairy Queen off Highway 100 and FM 1847.
With construction expected to start in June, McDonalds is expected to open as early as September 2013.
According to the 2010 Census, Los Fresnos only had a population of 5,542 people.
But Milum said the number jumps to 25,000 when neighboring communities such as Laureles, Indian Lake, Olmito, Las Yescas and Bayview are included.
