Officials speak out in Cameron County Judge recount scandal

Cameron County Pct. 1 Commissioner Sofia Benavides is weighing in on the recount controversy.

If somebody made a mistake then they should step up to the plate and stop putting a cloud on all this, Benavides said. A human error anybody can make it."

On Sunday morning, Action 4 News met with Cameron County Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa.

Hinojosa said County Election Administrator Roger Ortiz made the mistake when he failed to include a recount tally sheet from Precinct 54 in the recount vote totals.

That prompted Ortiz TMs earlier decision of declaring incumbent Carlos Cascos a winner to be a mistake.

Benavides said she was surprised to see Ortiz TMs reaction of going into hiding.

The precinct 1 commissioner said she has tried reaching out to Ortiz, but like us, she has received no response.

I will tell you|I will not be part of any type of cover up," Benavides said.

Benavides pointed out she was there the night of the recount on Friday as a poll watcher and saw everything going on.

In her eyes, no wrongdoing occurred then.

The result of the judge's race will now fall in the hands of the Cameron County Commissioners Court at their Friday afternoon meeting.

It TMs a job Benavides said she will take very seriously.

I expect to see a copy of those tally sheets|you know and that will tell me whether those.. the vote at 8 o TMclock and the vote at a 3 o TMclock whatever it was are in order," she said.

According to the commissioner, she expects neither incumbent Cascos nor challenger John Wood to be involved in the decision and hopes to have an official winner. She only hopes this whole mess wont discourage voters in Cameron County.

Cameron County District Attorney Armando Villalobos told reporters at a Wednesday afternoon press conference that he hopes that commssioners court can resolve the issue on their own.

But either way the meeting goes, Villalobos said he expects the recount to head to the courts.

The special commissioners meeting will take place Friday at 5 pm at the Dancy building in Brownsville.

The commissioners are expected to declare a winner.
