Sonic Drive-In shutdown for dirty dining posts 'renovations' sign

A "closed for renovations" sign at Sonic on 1174 Ruben Torres in Brownsville is the direct result of a health inspector closing the drive-in down for dirty dining. The eatery scored 29 demerits on a September 24th city check-up. The biggest health concern: the reach in cooler is nearly 20 degrees off the required mark, according to the health report. The drive-in is ordered shut down for more than 24 hours until a re-inspection. All off-temperature food is voluntarily destroyed. There's mold in the ice machine, dirty equipment and excessive fruit flies. An inspector says the insect contamination is all over the equipment in the back, by the onion ring station and slushy area left unclean. The report also states how the restaurant "needs serious housekeeping." A corporate spokesperson for Sonic sent a statement to the Food Patrol: "We were disappointed to learn of this report," Jason Acock, corporate communications said. "It is an isolated incident and does not meet our expectations or the expectations of the franchise owner. The franchise owner took immediate action to correct this situation and has redoubled their efforts to ensure our standards are met." Stir Fry inside the food court at the La Plaza Mall in McAllen is busted with 26 demerits. Violations include off-temperature chicken and other food left out of the fridge, no soap or paper towels for proper sanitation, a cross-contamination with blood drippings in the cold-room and a can of raid in the kitchen. Management has no comment for the Food Patrol regarding the September 23rd inspection. The Tejano Mart on 2601 South Cage Boulevard in Pharr isn't keeping it clean. Dead roaches and crickets turn up during a health inspection on Friday. The insect contamination helps make up some of the 14 demerits which include off-temperature barbacoa. Easy to Go Tacos #3 on 32784 Highway 100 in Los Fresnos is this week's featured top performer with zero demerits. Open for about 2 years, the restaurant prides itself on serving quality food from a clean kitchen. Yesenia Cherino is proud to accept a sticker from the Food Patrol. It's the first sticker awarded in the city in months. You know what the Food Patrol says to that--"Keep it clean!"
