      Unappetizing moldy cheese discovery inside dirty diner with 41 demerits

      Lali's on 267 West Robertson in San Benito is busted with moldy cheese, off-temperature beans and a dirty potato dicer.

      The restaurant scored 41 demerits during an October inspection.

      Lali's is busted with roaches too, according to an inspector.

      The Food Patrol tried to ask workers inside the restaurant shortly after closing if things have been cleaned up but they did not want to talk about the inspection.

      El Pescador on 360 East Business 77 in San Benito isn't keeping it clean with 27 demerits on an October inspection.

      A health inspection report showed the restaurant had expired bread, chewed corn on the cob near raw chicken and carne guisada and a cross-contamination of bacon over raw foods.

      Mara Calixtro, owner, talked with the Food Patrol about some of the violations.

      "There was bread that was just brought in but it had not been used yet," Maria explained. "We threw it away as soon as the inspector pointed it out."

      Maria also let the Food Patrol into the kitchen.She pointed out how clean the area is now.

      The violations on the report have been corrected, according to the owner.

      Twin Peaks Drive Thru on 645 Calle Milpa Verde tied for dirtiest on Food 4 Thought with 41 demerits on an inspection last week.

      The health department yanked their kitchen TMs permit for unsanitary conditions and for selling potentially hazardous, unapproved items.

      Other concerns in the kitchen included roaches.

      Dead roaches are seen on equipment in photographs taken by an inspector.

      Other pictures showed an Icee machine with a black substance in the nozzle.

      The kitchen area remains closed, according to the employee over the phone who added how the drive-thru portion is still open for business.

      Cedar House Bar & Grill on 117 South 7th Street in Donna is this week's featured top performer with zero demerits.

      Higinio De Los Rios, owner, said he TMs happy to get another sticker from the Food Patrol.

      "We try to keep it clean guys, and you've got a hell of a program out there," he said.

      The building has more than a hundred years worth of history, according to the owner.

      He recently added a new outdoor addition to help accommodate Winter Texans.

      De Los Rios says customers will come to a restaurant that TMs featured on Food 4 Thought for being clean.

      "We have to be responsible for what we are as business people, he explained.

      You know what the Food Patrol says to that: Keep it clean!
