11th out of 12 suspects to plead guilty in Panama Unit scandal
The 11th out of 12 suspects is expected to plead guilty for his role in the Panama Unit corruption scandal.
Alexis Espinoza is expected to appear before U.S. District Court Judge Randy Crane on Wednesday morning.
Federal court records show that Espinoza is expected to change his plea from "not guilty" to "guilty."
Espinoza, the son of Hidalgo Police Chief Rudy Espinoza, was one of the original suspects arrested in the case.
Both Espinoza and Jonathan Trevio, son of Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevio, were arrested following an FBI raid at the Mission Police Department.
Trevio and 10 other suspects in the Panama Unit scandal are expected to be sentenced on September 10th.
According to federal court records, several law enforcement officers teamed up with drug traffickers to steal drugs, sell them and split the profits.
Former Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office deputy Jorge Garza is left as the sole defendant in the Panama Unit scandal.
Garza is expected to go to trial on July 29th.
