14 injured after Border Patrol pursuit in Rio Grande City
Fourteen were injured Tuesday after a vehicle suspected of smuggling undocumented immigrants crashed into several stationary vehicles during a Border Patrol pursuit in Rio Grande City, officials say.
Marcelino A. Medina, a spokesman for the Rio Grande Valley Sector of Border Patrol, says several occupants were transported to a local hospital due to injuries sustained during the crash, but didn't specify how many.
Rio Grande City police Chief Noe Castillo says among those injured was a 6-year-old girl, who was airlifted to a hospital.
"I was told that a total of 14 people were injured in the crash," Castillo said in a statement to CBS 4 News.
The five-vehicle crash occurred in the downtown area, near San Antonio Street and Main Street, Castillo said.
Homeland Security Investigators and the Rio Grande City Police Department continue to investigate the case.
