At least 14 federal prisoners are dead following an early Friday morning disturbance at a state prison in Matamoros.
Tamaulipas Public Safety Secretary Jose Ives Soberon-Tijerina reported that a deadly knife fight took at Centro de Ejecucin de Sanciones (CEDES) early Friday morning.
Soberon-Tijerina reported that a confrontation erupted between two groups of prisoners leaving 14 men dead.
Prison guards received help from local, state and federal authorities to restore order.
Identities of those killed in the incident were not immediately available but Soberon-Tijerina reported they were booked in the CEDES back in July.
State authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.
This is the second major disturbance at the Matamoros prison this year.
Federal officials arrested 50 jail guards back in March after they allegedly let 41 prisoners from the CEDES.
