Employees at the Rio Grande Valley TMs largest school district are taking advantage of a resignation program aimed at saving the district millions of dollars for the next school year.
About 176 Brownsville Independent School District (BISD) employees have accepted an offer of cash in exchange for early notification of resignation.
According to district spokeswoman Drue Brown, some 116 teachers, counselors, nurses and librarians have applied for the $10,000 dollar incentive program.
Brown said 13 administrators and special assignment personnel have applied for the $4,500 dollar incentive.
Some 47 classified employees have applied for the $3,000 dollar incentive.
Brown said approximately 78 percent of the district's budget is comprised of employee compensation and benefits.
She goes on to say this plan is one method to help close the anticipated financial deficit.
Under the plan, any employee who voluntarily resigns his or her position by the last day of this school year will be eligible to receive a one-time early-notification payment.
The deadline to apply for the program is Monday, April 25th.
Any employee who accepts the offer will not be eligible for employment with BISD for at least two years.
