A lifeguard injured during an accident at Schlitterbahn Island Resort on South Padre Island remains hospitalized.

Despite reports from other media outlets, Valley Baptist Spokeswoman Teri Retana told Action 4 News Nicolas Benavides, 20, is listed in critical condition.

Sources close to the family told Action 4 News the 20-year-old was injured Wednesday when he and another employee were working on the resort TMs wave pool.

The source said a mechanical door was up overhead, when it suddenly slammed down, hitting Benavides in the head, leaving he and the other worker pinned.

South Padre Island Fire Department was reportedly called in to free the men with welding equipment.

Benavides was airlifted to Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.

The other man injured was transported to Valley Regional Hospital in Brownsville.

His name or condition have not been released.

Benavides had reportedly only been on the job for about four weeks when the accident happened.

Action 4 News will be attending a news conference at Schlitterbahn Island Resort at 3 p.m. today.

Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating the case.
