40 years in prison for double murder in Harlingen

      Victim: Edgar Villanueva

A man who pleaded guilty to a double murder in Harlingen has been sentenced to 40 years to prison.

Jose Luis Vega appeared before Judge Benjamin Euresti in the 107th State District Court on Tuesday morning.

Judge Euresti sentenced Vega to 40 years in prison for the deaths of 23-year-old Edgar Villanueva and 23-year-old Agustin Gonzalez, Jr.

The two men were gunned down while they were driving among others cruisers in downtown Harlingen on a Saturday night back in July 2010.

An Action 4 News investigation revealed that the suspects and the victims all had criminal histories prior the fatal double shooting.

Family members told Action 4 News that they were disappointed with the sentencing.

Sonia M. Gonzalez wrote on Facebook that Vega got off easy for the death of her brother Agustin.

We went to court today in Cameron county court house to seek justice for my brother, whom was brutally murder on the night of July 31, 2010 in Harlingen, she wrote. Him and his friend were killed. Well, there was no justice. He pleaded guilty at the last minute and he only got 40 years for two lives. No justice was made. I TMm disappointed in the criminal justice system, she said.
