A Harlingen man is trading a hospital bed for a jail cell after being formally charged in a DWI hit-and-run that left a baby hospitalized.

A Harlingen municipal judge arraigned 20-year-old Joe Montez III at the Valley Baptist Medical Center on Tuesday.

Montez is charged with two counts of intoxication assault and three counts of accident involving injury.

The judge issued a total of $450,000 dollar bonds for the charges.

Montez is accused of fleeing a Sunday evening wreck off Expressway 77 and Wilson Road that left two women and 6-month-old Mason Villegas injured.

The women were released from the hospital but Baby Mason remains fighting for his life.

Police investigating the accident found Montez at his home where he allegedly showed signs of drinking.

Montez was also hospitalized for his injuries but is expected to be jailed immediately after he is medically cleared.
