65 gamblers cited during Election Night 8-liner raid

Some three people are behind bars and another 65 people were cited for illegal gambling

It may have been Election Night but law enforcement officials stayed busy with a raid at an 8-liner arcade in Harlingen.

It all happened outside Harlingen city limits on the westbound frontage road of Expressway 83 between Spur 54 and Lewis Lane just before 8 p.m. Saturday.

The Cameron County District Attorney's Office led the raid with the help of Cameron County Pct. 5 deputy constables and Cameron County Sheriff's Department deputies.

Investigators reported that three arcade managers have been taken into custody while 65 patrons were all cited for illegal gambling.

One of the managers reportedly had a gun prompting a secondary investigation.

Authorities reported seizing 83 machines but are still counting the cash that was found at the scene.

Investigators also reported raiding the home of alleged arcade owner John Ortiz.

It is the third round of raids in the district attorney office's "Operation Bishop," an anti-illegal gambling crusade aimed at shutting down all 200 illegal 8-liner arcades in Cameron County.
