78-year-old Santa Rosa man dies after tire strikes through windshield
A 78-year-old Santa Rosa man died Saturday after a tire struck through his vehicle's windshield, according to a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Troopers say at about 10:51 a.m., Jerry R. Cronin, 78, of Santa Rosa was traveling alone in a Toyota Prius eastbound on State Highway 107 near Edinburg.
Preliminary investigation revealed a Chevrolet Suburban carrying five people, including the driver, "was traveling westbound on State Highway 107 when its front left tire and rim fell off the axel," according to the news release.
The tire traveled into oncoming traffic and struck the windshield of the Toyota Prius, causing Cronin to veer off the roadway.
Cronin was transported to a local hospital after the accident, where he later died.
Troopers continue to investigate the fatal crash.
