A 5-foot alligator has a new home in the wild after authorities discovered that a family in Alamo was keeping it as pet.

Texas Parks & Wildlife Department game wardens were recently called out to a rural home off South Alamo Road.

Game Warden Oscar Jaimez told Action 4 News that the family was keeping the alligator in a tub placed inside a chicken coop.

Jaimez said the family regularly fed the 5-foot long reptile raw chicken but the conditions it was kept in were not good.

Game wardens seized the alligator and released it into the Rio Grande River just south of Hidalgo.

Jaimez said game wardens gave the family a verbal citation for keeping the animal.

The family previously lived in Florida and Louisiana where alligators can be kept as pets but it is illegal to do so in Texas.
