An alleged member of the Vallucos gang is behind bars after leading authorities on a wild chase through several cities in Cameron County.

It all started with a hit and run accident off Primera Road and the frontage road of Expressway 77 around 7:15 a.m. Thursday.

Primera police told Action 4 News that 26-year-old Juan David Gaona refused to stop for an officer investigating the accident.

      High-Speed Chase

Gaona lead police on a chase down nearby Wilson Road up to Santa Rosa and then to Combes and Harlingen.

Investigators said speeds topped out at 115 mph and ended just a short distance from where it all started: off Loop 499 and the frontage of Expressway 77 where Gaona allegedly fled on foot.

Primera police, Cameron County Sheriff TMs Department deputies, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) state troopers and Harlingen police all participated in the chase.

Cameron County Jail records show Primera booked Gaona under evading arrest under a motor vehicle and evading arrest on foot charges.

      Criminal History

Investigators identified Gaona as a member of the Vallucos gang.

He told police that he fled because he had outstanding traffic warrants.

Court records show that Gaona had a criminal history that includes possession of a controlled substance and DWI going back to 2003.

Gaona appeared before Cameron County Justice of the Peace Linda Salazar on Thursday morning where he was issued $40,000 dollars in bonds.
