Authorities report Mexico-bound chase in Brownsville

Authorities are trying to learn the identify of a man who escaped after leading deputies on a Mexico-bound drug in Brownsville.

Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio said the chase ended off Mexico Boulevard near Brownsville's old Amigoland Mall early Tuesday afternoon.

Sheriff Lucio told Action 4 News it all started with a deputy trying to pull over the vehicle for a traffic violation.

The driver refused to stop and lead deputies, Border Patrol agents and Brownsville police on a chase that ended on a dirt road near the B&M International Bridge.

Sheriff Lucio said the driver abandoned the vehicle and swam across the Rio Grande River and into Mexico.

Investigators allegedly found several bundles of marijuana inside the vehicle.

The driver's identity was not immediately known.
