The Brownsville Sports Park will be transformed into a back-to-school bonanza this Saturday.
Members of the Valley International Christian Center and "Wheels on Fire" are bringing skateboarding and freebies to Brownsville and surrounding communities.Eric Garza with V.I.C.C says, "We will be giving out backpacks full with school supplies to the students of Brownsville."
One thousand of them to be exact filled with notebooks, pencils, crayons and glue, just in time for the start of school."There are many families in our community that need the help. Our school district is considered disadvantaged by the state of Texas and many parents can't afford to buy school supplies and school backpacks."Organizers with Valley International Christian Center through church donations and other fundraising efforts throughout the year will also offer free hair cuts to kids, as well as, health screenings and college information for the older students.They've joined forces with Wheels On Fire, a local Christian skateboarding club, to reach out to the valley's youth before they hit the books.Sasha Romero of Wheels on Fire says, "It TMs just an outreach to get the families involved with these teens...a lot of them come from broken homes, broken families. Somebody is there for them."Wheels on Fire will host a skateboarding competition at the sports park Saturday with hopes of putting a positive spin on the sport while providing a $1,000 prize to the winner which will give them the tools they need to get the school year off to a great start.The Valley International Christian Center's Back to School Bash is open to all valley students and is free.It's set for this Saturday at the Brownsville Sports Park from noon to 9pm. Registration for the skate competition begins at 11.
