Border Patrol agents arrest 40-year-old Mexican man, want to deport him for 7th time

Border Patrol agents arrested a 40-year-old Mexican man near Hidalgo last week and want to deport him for the seventh time.

Agents arrested Jose Fernando Zuniga-Penaflor near Hidalgo on May 5.

"Record checks revealed the Defendant was formally Deported/Excluded from the United States on May 5, 2017, near Hidalgo, Texas," according to the federal criminal complaint against him.

The government had deported Zuniga six times since 2009, according to federal court records.

  1. On Nov. 9, 2009, Zuniga pleaded guilty to unlawfully entering the United States.

    U.S. Magistrate Judge Peter E. Ormsby sentenced him to 60 days in prison.

  2. On Jan. 19, 2012, Zuniga pleaded guilty to unlawfully entering the United States.

  3. On May 14, 2012, Zuniga pleaded guilty to unlawfully entering the United States.

    U.S. Magistrate Judge Dorina Ramos sentencing him to 75 days in prison.

  4. On April 19, 2013, Zuniga pleaded guilty to unlawfully entering the United States.

    U.S. Magistrate Judge Peter E. Ormsby sentenced him to 150 days in prison.

  5. On Sept. 2, 2015, Zuniga pleaded guilty to unlawfully entering the United States.

  6. On Oct. 28, 2016, Zuniga pleaded guilty to unlawfully entering the United States.

    U.S. Magistrate Judge Nancy K. Johnson sentenced him to 180 days in prison.

Zuniga is now charged with illegal re-entry.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Dorina Ramos ordered Zuniga held without bond.

Court records don't list an attorney for Zuniga, who remains in federal custody.
