Two men are facing criminal charges after being accused of trying to rob a popular bakery in Edinburg where an employee chased them away with a kitchen knife.

Edinburg police arrested 48-year-old Andy Mercado and 29-year-old Jacob Lee Villarreal on Saturday morning.

Investigators told Action 4 News that a man walked into the La Reynera Bakery off West Monte Cristo Road around 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

The man allegedly pulled out a metal pipe and demanded cash.

An employee in the back of the bakery heard what was going on, grabbed a knife and chased the suspect out of the store.

The suspect jumped into a blue getaway van, which was stopped by police with both Mercado and Villarreal inside.

Both men are facing aggravated robbery charges but jail records show that Villarreal is also facing a failure to identify and possession of a controlled substance charge.

Bond information was not immediately available.
