A Brownsville man is behind bars following a botched robbery in the parking lot of a local supermarket.

Brownsville police arrested 24-year-old Joel Malagon Correa on an aggravated robbery charge on Wednesday.

It all happened in the parking lot of the HEB supermarket off Boca Chica Boulevard and Paredes Line Road.

A woman told police that she was in her car getting ready to leave the store when Correa walked up and knocked on her window.

Correa allegedly displayed what appeared to be a handgun on his waistband and told her not to scream.

The woman reacted by releasing the brake of her car causing it to hit another vehicle in the parking lot.

Correa fled the scene but was arrested on East 7th Street.

Police found his jacket and a toy gun he allegedly used in the botched robbery.

Correa appeared before a Brownsville municipal judge on Thursday morning where he was issued $100,000 dollars in bonds.
