UPDATE: Brownsville police detain man who escaped custody

UPDATE: Brownsville police say they have detained a man who escaped custody Thursday afternoon.

At about 1:20 p.m. , police responded to the area near the 2200 block of South Indiana Ave., regarding a man firing off a weapon, according to a news release.

Police met with 21-year-old Ricardo Gonzalez, who was in possession of the handgun, and successfully secured the weapon without incident. When officers attempted to place Gonzalez in the unit, police say that's when Gonzalez ran away, according to Officer J.J. Treviño, a spokesman for the Brownsville Police Department.

Authorities later found Gonzalez hiding in a brushy area about two hours later at 3:30 p.m.

Police say it was a multi-agency effort to find Gonzalez.

No injuries were reported.

Gonzalez may face several charges including possession of a handgun, escape and resisting arrest.

UPDATE: Brownsville police detained the suspect, according to Brownsville police Chief Orlando Rodriguez.

Original story: The Brownsville Police Department continues to search for a man who escaped custody near the 2200 block of South Indiana Ave on Thursday afternoon.

Police say they were going to arrest a man when he ran away from them.

The man has not been identified.
