Brownsville sex offender formally charged for murders in Oregon

Cutlip was living in Room 212 of the Hotel Colonial in downtown Brownsville.

A convicted sex offender who had been living at a hotel in downtown Brownsville has been formally charged with two murders in Oregon.

Jeffrey Cutlip is accused of strangling a 44-year-old woman and killing a 15-year-old girl in the Portland, Oregon area back in the 1970s.

According to Portland police, Cutlip confessed to four murders when speaking to Brownsville police over the weekend.

But so far, authorities are only charging Cutlip with two murders.

The first murder allegedly took place was on August 6th 1975.

That TMs when 44-year-old Marlene Claire Carlson was found strangled in her apartment. She had been missing for a week.

The second charge is for the death of 15-year-old Julie Marie Bennett who went missing on April 4th, 1977.

Bennett TMs body was found two days later floating in Portland TMs Johnson Creek.

Cold case homicide unit detectives are continuing to investigate both cases.

Family members are not talking but detectives told Action 4 News that releasing any additional information could compromise the investigation.

Cutlip is being held at the Cameron County Jail where he will be in court on Wednesday morning regarding extradition to Oregon.
