Brownsville woman accused of attempting to smuggle 108 pounds of marijuana across bridge
A 39-year-old Brownsville woman is accused of attempting to smuggle more than 100 pounds of marijuana across the Gateway International Bridge on Monday, according to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Officers found 67 packages of marijuana hidden within the woman's gray 2007 Chrysler 300 when she applied for entry into the United States. U.S. Customs and Border Protection says the packages — weighing a total of 108.22 pounds — had a street value of approximately $21, 644.
Port Director Petra Horne stated in the news release:
“CBP remains committed to the security of our borders. The vigilance of our officers played an important role in keeping these drugs from entering our country.”
Officers seized the marijuana and the vehicle and arrested the woman, who was not identified in the news release and remains in federal custody.
