A Garland man is behind bars in the Rio Grande Valley after authorities learned he was wanted on sexual abuse charges in California.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested 41-year-old Refugio Escalante on Tuesday.
Escalante arrived from Matamoros at Brownsville TMs Gateway International Bridge.
A routine records check revealed that Escalante was wanted on a continuous sexual assault of a child charge from Riverside, California.
Details about the criminal investigation in California were not immediately available.
Customs officers turned Escalante over the custody of Cameron County Sheriff TMs Department deputies.
The Garland, Texas man remains in custody at the Cameron County Jail where he faces extradition to Cailfornia.
