Wed, 22 Apr 2009 13:33:14 GMT — The Fernandez family of La Feria first decided to build a new home 10 years ago. They sold their existing home to clear the way for the building of a new one. But Donna Fernandez said the contractor left the project and walked away with $28,000 in cash. "Back in 99 we hired the first contractor but he didn TMt finish, Fernandez said. The family hired a second contractor who also ran off with their money without starting the project. Fernandez said the family lost a total of $63,000 dollars. Making things even more difficult, her mother Esmeralda Fernandez was diagnosed with colon cancer and passed away in July 2008. "Her dying wish was for our house to be finished, Donna Fernandez said. But that's when Omar Herrera, a contractor from Pharr, stepped in to help Esmeralda TMs dying wish come true. "Its a story that touched my heart and I TMm here with my sub contractors, we TMre trying to help them finish out the home, Herrera said. The Rio Grande Valley businessman his subcontractors all donating their time for free. J.A. A/C Service, Garcia Framing, Perez Painting and they have J&J plumbing, Herrera said naming his subcontractors. Fernandez said she TMs thankful for the help. "Just thank you very much to all the workers, OTB Construction from the bottom of our hearts thank you very much, Fernandez said. But the home still needs carpet, tile, lightning and plumbing fixtures to be completed. Fernandez and Herrera said donations would be needed to get the job done. "Open your heart and feel what I feel and let TMs get the house done for him, Herrera said. As for the contractors, who allegedly didn't finish the work, Fernandez said one of them passed away but the other is still at large. "You still have an opportunity to help out, Fernandez said in an on-air appeal to the contractor. You still have a big opportunity to help out. It TMs not too late and my mom forgave you.
