Cameron County commissioners approve pay increase for jailers
The Cameron County Commissioners Court on Tuesday approved a $1,500 wave increase for jailers as part of the county's new budget for the 2017-2018 year.
Currently, 288 jailers are responsible for more than 1,000 inmates in the county jail.
However, the department is in need of 60 more inmates to meet state requirements. Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr. says implementing jailers salaries has been a priority for the county since it was requested earlier this year.
"We're still under the process of a county-wide salary review and, obviously, that is something we wanted to continue to address both for our jailers, deputy sheriffs, and deputy constables from a law enforcement stand point," Treviño said. "To make sure we try to provide as much resources as we can to make their salaries competitive, so that way they're willing to stay with us long term."
Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio says he is thankful that county commissioners have approved the request. Lucio believes the new increase will not only reward current jailers for their hard work, but also help with meeting the jailer requirement.
