Cameron County gets more than $5.9 million from Osiel Cardenas forfeiture

The Cameron County Sheriff's Department has been awarded $5.9 million dollars for their work in Osiel Cardenas Gulf Cartel Drug Forfeiture.

Out of the $29 million that Cardenas turned over in cash when he was arrested, sheriff's department got more than $5.9 million dollars.

Sheriff Omar Lucio said Brownsville Police Department, Cameron County District Attorney's Office and several agencies in Hidalgo County will also get money.

Cardenas was extradited from Mexico to the United States in 2007 and sentenced to 25 years in prison back in February 2010.

Sheriff Lucio said the it's largest seizure award ever given to the Cameron County Sheriff's Department.

The money will be used to increase patrols and buy more equipment.
