Cameron County plans to install street lights in San Benito colonia
The Cameron County Commissioners Court approved a project to install street lights in a San Benito colonia on Monday.
Seventy five residents signed a petition, asking the county to install street lights on Santos Gomez Drive. About 50 households will benefit from the lights, which will cost less than $3,000.
"All we have are the lights at home, but the rest of the street is completely dark," said Lucia Vela, who moved to Santos Gomez Drive about 30 years ago.
Cameron County Community Development Coordinator Raul Garcia said the county will pay for the infrastructure and residents will pay the electric bill.
Residents said they're willing to pay extra for lights, which make them feel safer at night.
Cameron County plans to install the lights by October.
