A tank-like vehicle could soon be seen on the streets of Cameron County.
Sheriff Omar Lucio said his office received a military-grade armored vehicle through a grant.
The armored vehicle was used overseas by soldiers in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
Deputies and the SWAT team will be able to use it in tense situations like standoffs to protect themselves.
It can carry about 20 passengers and can travel up to 55 miles per hour.
Sheriff Lucio it can also be used for rescues during hurricanes where it will be able to travel in flooded area.
The sheriff's department had to compete with other law enforcement agencies around the state to get this vehicle.
But the department got the $400,000 vehicle for free.
