Cameron Park mom jailed for leaving son at playground alone

A Cameron Park mother has been arrested after allegedly leaving her 8-year-old son alone at a local community center.

Cameron County Sheriff TMs Departments deputies arrested 42-year-old Blanca Estela Cortez on a child abandonment charge on Thursday.

The 42-year-old mother allegedly left her little boy alone and told him to, Go look for someone to play with.

According to court records obtained by Action 4 News, the deserted boy was wandering the streets and found other children to play with.

But an employee at Cameron Park Centro Cultural noticed the boy was wondering around without supervision.

The employee approached the little boy and asked him where his parents were.

The abandoned boy allegedly told them that his mom left him there and told him to find children to play with while she went home to be with the little boy TMs father.

A deputy was going to look for the boy TMs mother when Cortez approached them.

Cortez allegedly told deputies that she left her little boy to play with other kids while it was still sunlight. But she did not return for the abandoned boy until dusk had fallen.

The 42-year-old mother allegedly tried to plea with the officers while being taken to the Cameron County Jail because she said she did not know her actions were wrong or against the law.

Deputies notified Child Protective Services who took the boy into their custody.

Cortez appeared before a Cameron County Magistrate Judge on Friday morning where she was issued a $7,500 bond.

Jail records show that U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers also filed an immigration detainer against her.

The employee called Child Protective Services to let them know about the situation.
