Authorities are asking the public to avoid using Highway 281 in Edinburg while a medical helicopter lands to pick up a person injured in a major auto accident.
It all happened on the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 281 and FM 2812 on the city's northside just after 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Edinburg firefighters and police were called to the scene.
Full details were not immediately available but investigators reported that an elderly man veered off the road in BMW and became involved in a rollover accident.
Witnesses were able to get the elderly man out but his car caught on fire.
Edinburg city spokeswoman Irma Garza told Action 4 News that the accident has created a traffic jam.
People caught in the traffic posted pictures of the flames on Facebook and other social media outlets.
Officials are asking the public to take alternate routes while a medical helicopter lands to pick up one of the injured people and crews clear the scene.
Edinburg police said the elderly man was rushed to a local hospital where he was listed in serious condition.
