Charges against South Padre Island EDC director may be upgraded

The director for South Padre Island's Economic Development Corporation may be facing more serious after a man she hit in an alleged DWI wreck passed away.

South Padre Island police arrested Darla Lapeyre on two counts of intoxication assault on Saturday.

Investigators told Action 4 News that Lapeyre was under the influence of alcohol when she was behind the wheel and hit a motorcycle with her car.

The male motorcycle driver was airlifted to the Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen while the female passenger was taken to Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville.

Authorities said the motorcycle driver was seriously injured and passed away at the hospital on Monday afternoon.

The man's name was not released but investigators but investigators said Lapeyre may now face intoxication manslaughter charges for his death.

South Padre Island police said Lapeyre spent the night in jail and posted bond on Sunday morning.

Action 4 News called the Economic Development Coporation for comment but calls were not immediately returned.
