Chase ends with Rio Grande City police seizing $1.1 million in cash

Rio Grande City police spent Friday counting cash.

Officers seized more than a million dollars from a car involved in a Friday afternoon chase.

Authorities are now looking for the driver who abandoned the car near the Rio Grande River.

It all started around 12 p.m. Friday.

A Rio Grande City police officer tried to make a traffic stop on a grey Volkswagen Jetta on U.S. Highway 83.

The driver refused to stop and lead police on a chase down Trophy Road.

The suspect drove towards the Rio Grande River and jumped out running into a wooded area.

The officer inspected the car and found three black bags inside the trunk.

Investigators reported that the bags contained a total of $1.1 million dollars.

Officers took the cash to a local bank to count the it and to confirm the exact amount.

Rio Grande City police said it TMs the largest amount of cash they have ever found abandoned by a suspect.

Police are still looking for that suspect.

He is a Hispanic male, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and dark-complected.
