We all know two things are certain in life, death and taxes. However, local tax experts with H&R block say don't fear Uncle Sam.
In fact experts say there are many new tax credits you can cash in on, and if you think you owe money to the IRS, you may be in for a surprise.
Local resident Shari Diegel knows the clock is ticking to file her taxes. Diegel tells Action 4 News, "April 15th is tax time, I think it's something everybody has to do."
We caught up with Diegel at a local H & R block in Harlingen. Diegel was interested in learning about all of the new tax credits.
Diegel says, "I'm not sure what they all are." District Administrator with H&R Block Amiee Gonzales tells Action 4 news tax credits apply to a wide range of people from retiree's to college students.
Some of the credits include the first time home buyer tax credit, the new vehicle purchase tax credit, education benefits credit, military tax credit and job related deductions.
With so many tax credits out there consumers could end up with more money in their pockets, or if you have to pay up you may not owe as much as you think.
Gonzales says, We have a lot of clients they leave you know very ecstatic, they are crying I TMm like what TMs wrong and they TMre just overwhelmed with all of the credits that have changed.
Gonzales says for some filing your taxes can be a little never racking, but she offers this advice, Don TMt let taxes scare you.
Remember to file your taxes by April 15th or be sure to file for an extension. If you do end up owing the IRS and can TMt pay the lump sum all at once you can set up a payment plan.
