Clues left in trash led to Laguna Heights mother, boyfriend

Maria De La Luz Chavez // Cameron County Jail

Clues left behind in bags of trash led authorities investigating an illegal dumping incident to a Laguna Heights mother and her boyfriend.

Cameron County Pct. 1 deputy constables arrested Maria De La Luz-Chavez and her boyfriend Erick Gomez.

Constable Horacio Zamora told Action 4 News that the investigation started with a complaint from an apartment complex in Laguna Heights.

Investigators found bags of trash in an alleyway between Roosevelt and Jefferson Streets.

Deputy constables sifted through the garbage and found information about De La Luz-Chavez TMs children and their schools.

Constable Zamora said deputies were then able to track down the couple.

Both De La Luz-Chavez and Gomez remain in custody at the Cameron County Jail.

U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have filed immigration detainers against both of them.

Constable Zamora said the children were turned over to the custody of their father.
