Copper thieves charged in multiple cities

Two alleged copper wire thieves are now charged in a second city.

The two Valley natives are suspected of being part of a copper theft ring, hitting construction supply companies across the state. Cities across the Valley are taking turns bringing charges against the pair.

Alberto Ortiz and Irasema Ortiz were both arrested Saturday during a sting operation in Mission.

Police caught the pair in the act of stealing tens of thousands of dollars worth of copper wiring.

The pair placed an order with construction supply companies posing as employees of real customers.

When the victim would get a bill as the suspects picked up the order, they realized an order was never placed.

Police said the pair was charged by Pharr and Mission for the same crime.

They allegedly stole $7,500 of copper wiring from Valmac Electric Supply in Pharr.

Police are hoping these arrests will help them catch the mastermind of the ring who they believe lives in Houston.

Both are also believed to have stolen from an electric supply company in Brownsville.
