Copper Thieves hit Harlingen school district four times

Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District is the latest target of copper thieves.

From August 9th to August 16th, Michael Lee Spencer, 34, and Rudy Gutierrez, 18, are suspected of stealing more than $30,000 dollars worth of copper piping from air conditioning units from schools within the districts.

According to police reporters, the thieves would gain access to the roof, and cut and remove the copper pipping connected to the air conditioning system.

The schools targeted were Coakley Middle School, Sam Houston Elementary, Lamar Elementary and Bowie Elementary.

Harlingen Police worked closely with members of the community to solve this case.

Spencer and Gutierrez are charged with five counts of theft of copper , and one count of criminal mischief.

Their bond is set at $68,000 dollars each.
