Cummings Middle School campus remains closed amid investigation

The campus for Brownsville's Cummings Middle School remains closed amid an ongoing investigation into the shooting death of student.

Police shot and killed 15-year-old Jaime Gonzalez on Wednesday morning.

Investigators told Action 4 News that the eighth grade student had a pellet gun, ran towards officers and refused to stop when ordered.

The school remains closed on Thursday amid an ongoing investigation.

Brownsville Independent School District officials moved classes from Cummings Middle School across town to Breeden Elementary School.

Out of the 750 students at Cummings, school district officials reported that only 250 showed up for classes at Breeden on Thursday.

Brownsville ISD officials said they have made a team of counselors available to students and staff.

Officials reported that classroom instruction is in progress at Breeden but that the atmosphere is "subdued."

The police investigation at Cummings Middle School is expected to end on Thursday.

Regular classes will resume at the school on Friday morning.
