Deputies bust cockfighting ring north of Weslaco
Authorities are investigating an illegal gambling operation after discovering a cockfighting ring that was being run at a home just north of Weslaco.
It all happened at a rural home at 1930 Mile 12 North on Saturday afternoon.
Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to the home for suspicious activity at 2:23 p.m. Saturday.
Deputies arrived at the home and discovered 60 people at a cockfighting arena.
Investigators found roosters, syringes, a betting board, a concession stand and cash in envelopes.
All the spectators were released without being cited because the rooster fight had not started yet.
Deputies identified the property owner and he allegedly confessed to organizing the cockfighting event.
No charges have been filed at this time but Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevio reported that deputies are gathering more information to properly file them.
