A rural Mercedes man is behind bars after being accused of domestic violence and taking a baby along for a wild ride in a high-speed chase.

Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested 26-year-old Arturo Saenz, Jr. on multiple criminal charges on Tuesday night.

Court records show that it all started with a domestic disturbance at a home in the Indian Hills subdivision just north of Mercedes.

Saenz allegedly attacked his common law wife by putting a knife to her neck as well as putting a rope around her neck and threatening to kill her.

The woman told deputies that Saenz took off in his Chevrolet pickup truck with the couple's baby.

Deputies spotted his truck off FM 1015 and Mile 13 1/2 North and tried to pull it over but Saenz allegedly refused to stop.

Saenz allegedly led deputies on an 80 mph chase that ended off Mile 2 West and Mile 13 1/2 North.

Deputies saw Saenz running away from the truck with a baby carrier but were able to stop him.

Investigators charged Saenz with aggravated assault, evading arrest and child endangement.

Saenz remains behind bars in Hidalgo County Jail under a $120,000 in bonds.
