Deputies: Toddler found alone, in the dark asking for "mommy"

A former police officer and his wife are out on bond after deputies reporting finding their 2-year-old son home alone and in the dark asking for "mommy."

Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested Jorge Abraham Navarro and Kimberly Ginna Puente on a child abandonment charge on Friday monring.

Court records obtained by Action 4 News show that deputies were called to a rural apartment complex off Business 83 and Showers Road just outside Palmview back on April 19th.

A witness told deputies that a child was left alone inside one of the apartments.

Deputies looked inside the window and saw a 2-year-old boy alone and in the dark asking for "mommy."

The deputy and witness knocked on the doors and windows but the boy did not answer or come forward.

Investigators reported the doors and windows were all locked and secured with burglar bars.

Navarro arrived at the scene and let deputies inside where they found the boy lying on the floor next to the front door.

Court records show Justice of the Peace Ismael "Melo" Ochoa signed an arrest warrant for Navarro and Puente on Thursday, May 8th.

Peitas Police Chief Roel Bermea told Action 4 News that Navarro was employed as a police officer with his agency at the time of the incident but resigned from his post shortly after.

Hidalgo County Jail records show that both Navarro and Puente were released from custody after each of them posted $20,000 personal recognizance bonds.
