Diesel spill closes northbound lanes of Highway 281

Clean up crews were hard at work early Thursday morning after a tractor-trailer and a pickup truck collision.

The accident happened about one mile north of the Brooks/Hidalgo County line on Hwy 281 north and caused one lane to close for several hours.

Linn-San Manuel Fire Chief Domingo Hinojosa said the driver of the pickup was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries, the other driver refused treatment at the scene.

The tractor-trailer was hauling diesel tanks which ruptured during the wreck, spilling fuel on the road. A chemical response team was quick to arrive and cleaned up the spill.

The closed lane was reopened around 8:30 a.m. after the road was cleared of debris.

Chief Hinojosa says the only debris that remains is located in the median and that would be cleaned up soon.
