Donna school board issues due process policy

The new policy will ensure that employees are not fired or reassigned without proper due process.

The Donna school board implemented a new due process policy Tuesday night which will strengthen job security for non-contracted employees.

The school board worked with the Texas State Teacher's Association to form the policy. It will ensure that employees are not fired or reassigned without proper due process.

"The due process is just basically for the protection of the employees, but it details and outlines what the process is going to be and what the circumstances are," said school board president Albert Sandoval.

The policy was passed just two months after a jury found four Donna school board members liable for demoting employees who didn't politically support them. Sandoval, however, said the timing is purely coincidental.

"It has nothing to do with the political retaliation lawsuit. TSTA has been trying to get this policy on the agenda for about the past two years," Sandoval said.

Sandoval said he does hope the new procedures will prevent similar lawsuits from being filed in the future.
