Down stop sign leads to fatal auto accident

Fatal accident outside Edinburg

Action 4 News has confirmed that an 18-year-old was killed in an auto accident early Saturday afternoon.

The victim has been identified as Rai Garcia of Pharr.

The accident happened outside Edinburg city limits, at the intersection of Sharp and Rogers Road.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety, a Red caravan was traveling northbound when it collided with a Silver Pontiac at the intersection.

A stop sign was down at the intersection. Neighbors said the sign was knocked over the night before.

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and Edinburg Fire Department responded to the scene.

The Jaws of Life were used to get the victim out of the car. His passenger was taken to McAllen Medical Center.

The driver of the caravan suffered injuries to her throat. She and her passenger were also taken to McAllen Medical Center.

DPS warns if you see downed stop signs or street signs call your local police department or DPS.
