A Mission woman is behind bars after being charged for the death of a 16-year-old Palmview High School student.
Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) state troopers arrested 36-year-old Carmen Gonzalez-Velez on Wednesday morning.
Investigators said Gonzalez-Velez has been charged with a fatal February 24th accident that ended with the death of Brenda Cuellar.
The 16-year-old soccer player was getting off a La Joya ISD school bus when she was hit by Gonzalez-Velez's car off La Homa Road.
State troopers told Action 4 News that Gonzalez-Velez failed to stop for the school bus, which was using a stop sign and flashing red lights while students were getting exiting.
Under Texas state law, drivers must stop while students are getting on or off a school bus.
Bond information was not immediately available but Gonzalez-Velez remains in custody at the Hidalgo County Jail under a criminal negligent homicide charge.
Family and friends of Cuellar are holding a funeral expenses fundraiser for her at the Dairy Queen restaurant off Palma Vista Drive in Palmview from 6 to 8 p.m. today.
