Dropped cell phone blamed in DWI wreck

A woman who allegedly drove drunk told authorities she dropped her cell phone causing a two vehicle collision.

The crashed happened Sunday around 7 a.m. on the 5600 block of North Bicentennial Boulevard in McAllen.

The McAllen Police and Fire Department responded to the scene.

Authorities said driver Patricia Puente TMs 2009 maroon Ford F-150 crashed head on into the victim TMs vehicle.

Puente said that as she was driving towards the intersection of Bicentennial and Dove Avenue, dropped her cell phone and tried to pick it up.

According to documents, the vehicle veered towards the victim TMs car in lane and struck her head on, pushing the victim TMs vehicle into the curb of the grassy area.

Witnesses said that Puente TMs vehicle was speeding as it crashed into the 2013 Subaru Impreza.

During questioning after the accident, police detected an alcoholic odor from Puente.

Documents stated that Puente drank the night before at dinner and at a friend TMs home, where she spent the night.

A blood drawn sample detected that alcohol was still in Puente TMs system.

Both women were taken to local hospitals for evaluation.

The victim suffered blood loss due to a large cut to her ankle, which was also broken from the collision.

Puente was arrested and taken to the McAllen Police Department for booking.
