A drug chase suspect faced a federal judge after crashing his station wagon inside one of the most popular parks in the Rio Grande Valley.
U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents arrested 20-year-old Luis Enrique Alvarado-Morales on federal drug charges.
Court records obtained by Action 4 News show that the chase started off U.S. Expressway 83 and Green Road in Palmview late Friday afternoon.
A Palmview police officer reported seeing Alvarado-Morales behind the wheel rolling through a stop sign. Neither he nor his passenger were reportedly wearing seat belts.
Alvarado-Morales led police on a chase down Bentsen Palm Drive where he allegedly threw bundles of marijuana out the window.
The chase continued through a remote area of Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park where he crashed his car into a tree.
Paramedics rushed Alvarado-Morales to the McAllen Medical Center for treatment while authorities seized 56 bundles with 971 pounds of marijuana at the scene.
Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) officials, who oversee the state park, told Action 4 News that the chase did not cause any significant damage to the park and that no visitors were affected.
Alvarado-Morales appeared before U.S. Magistrate Court Judge Peter Ormsby in McAllen on Monday and again on Thursday morning.
Federal court records show that Alvarado-Morales is not eligible for bond because he is an illegal immigrant from Mexico.
