Drug smugglers foiled crossing marijuana at Valley holy site

The La Lomita Chapel is along the shores of the Rio Grande River.

Authorities are searching for a group of smugglers after they abandoned a large load of marijuana at a Rio Grande Valley holy site.

U.S. Border Patrol agents foiled drug smugglers behind the La Lomita monastery just south of Mission late Tuesday night.

Border Patrol spokesman Henry Mendiola confirmed that the smugglers fled across the Rio Grande River to Mexico but left behind 363 pounds of marijuana.

Investigators seized the drugs and searched the immediate area with no further results.

The historic seminary was left in ruins by a fire in 2010.

Officials with the Diocese of Brownsville did not have an immediate comment about the incident.
