A drug smuggling suspect is behind bars after he allegedly tried to run over a game warden who tried to stop him.

Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) game wardens arrested Jose Dario Salinas-Ramirez late Tuesday night.

Investigators told Action 4 News that it all happened off of U.S. Highway 83 just west of Roma just after 10 p.m. Tuesday.

TPWD Major Chris Davis said game wardens were called to help Border Patrol agents stop drug smugglers in the area.

A game warden arrived at the scene an approached Salinas-Ramirez's vehicle on foot.

Salinas-Ramirez allegedly drove off and aimed for the game warden, who was able to move out of the way unharmed.

Authorities tracked down and stopped Salinas-Ramirez nearby where they found about 700 pounds of marijuana inside his vehicle.

Investigators charged Salinas-Ramirez with felony possession of marijuana and aggravated assault of a public servant.

Major Davis told Action 4 News that Salinas-Ramirez was identified as an illegal immigrant from Mexico.

Salinas-Ramirez remains in custody at the Starr County Jail for the criminal charges and an immigration detainer.
