An attempt to smuggle drugs across the swollen Rio Grande went terribly wrong on Thursday morning.
U.S. Border Patrol officials told Action 4 News that agents spotted drug smugglers driving out on a levee south of Palmview.
The driver of the van slammed into a gate and crashed into the waters of the flooded river.
Border Patrol agents that's when the men aboard rafts and jet skis retrieved the drugs from the partially submerged van and headed back to Mexico.
Trevio says agents have had to move their operations more north because of flooding conditions but that hasn't stopped them from doing their job.
With these rising water we've seen a decrease in people trying to get across but not those trying to smuggle narcotics, Trevio said.
